One of the things we hear is that all faiths are equal in God’s sight: Islam, Buddhism, Native American Spiritism, New Age, or whatever…. The reasoning goes that if God is good and loving (which He surely is), then He wouldn’t be so narrow-minded as to let only Christians into His heaven.
Logic like this affirms the fact that God has built within every human being a spiritual vacuum. It not only causes us to yearn for knowledge about our Creator, but for assurance of an existence after death. Deep down, people of all cultures are driven to pursue spiritual truth.
All religions contain a portion of spiritual truth or they wouldn’t be so alluring. The problem comes when people choose to answer their own insecurities by believing in a god of their own making. They comfort themselves by saying it isn’t so much what you believe as long as you’re sincere. But God says, “Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:10-11).
Human nature tends to want rules and regulations that will please or appease an otherwise unapproachable god. While it’s true that God the Father has high standards that we cannot meet, Jesus has fulfilled all of those requirements for us. We can rest assured, then, that if we’ll surrender our hearts and lives to Him, He will lift us out of our human condition and grant us eternal life. Only the Christian faith teaches that eternal salvation—along with a loving, personal relationship with the Almighty God— is attainable through Jesus Christ. Other religions wouldn’t dare claim it’s that simple.
Let’s not be swayed when we hear people talking about a God who couldn’t possibly be so narrow-minded as to limit Himself to only Christian believers. Remind them, and yourself, that the Way is narrow––and that God sent Jesus Christ to this earth to rescue us from eternal damnation. We need to put our trust in His plan rather than one of our own design.
