Women, Paul does not say no!
Posted Thu, 12/15/2011 - 1:00am by Maria Francesca F...
Ever wonder what Paul is doing in 1 Timothy 2 when he is quoted as writing, 'I do not permit a women to have authority over a man?' There is more going on there than meets the eye. Let's put our first century lenses on and journey into Ephesus!
Just a small step in a journey of God's dream of a community of oneness!

Yes, I listened to your explanation of what Paul was saying in this Scripture. I agree with your synopsis about the word Paul was teaching Timothy at Ephesus. These people were still having to be fed the milk of the Word and not the meat of the Word. Although the people were not really babies in Christ they were acting like they were. Just like today we have a whole GENERATION of Christians who are still seeking the milk of the Word when they have drank in enough over the last 30yrs or more to drown a herd of elephants and have not grown enough in their walk with Jesus to go on and spread the GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST. A whole lot of people still seeking the feel goods and goosebumps but not realizing there purpose is to PREACH, TEACH and make disciples of all men and women. There for this letter to Timothy was needed to set a ( SOLID foundation of teaching the TRUTHS of the Gospel ) to these people at Ephesus. Very well said Francesca French!

Totally agree. If you really look at the gospels, Jesus liberated women. For instance, Mary chose the better place( and it wasn't the kitchen). Also, Jesus revealed his resurrected self first to a woman, and then he proceeded to give HER the command of the great commission (go tell the disciples) If Jesus was alive today, he would never silence a women or consider her second place to teach the gospel.

My Marriage and Family Therapy cohort has been talking about this very subject for a few weeks. Some of the women in my cohort are meeting some stiff opposition to their pursuit of theological education. You nailed the spirit of what we have been talking about so well here. I have shared this broadly already. Thanks for doing this Maria.

A very well spoken and timely message Maria! This is something the church needs to start taking seriously. Building major doctrines based around errant views of one verse of scripture will just not cut it any more. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thank you, P! This letter was absolutely necessitated! It is a 'trouble shooting' letter. This was Paul's desperate attempt to rememdy a terminal church. This letter is the exception and not the rule. While is it the exception, it still speaks to us today. Our job is to interpret what is going on in this letter and apply the principles to our lives (and if need be, churches in terminal situations) today.

Thanks for watching and commenting, Chris. I appreciate it. It is a shame that so many people still struggle with this issue. All it takes is a little first century homework. ;)

Jesus did liberate women! He liberated all who were oppressed and set the world back to rights by launching God's project of new humanity which was and is God's community of oneness. Also, think about it...'you are a woman so you can't teach and/or proclaim the gospel? sorry, your gender doesn't qualify you?' That just doesn't make any sense from a logical point of view.
