Get ‘R Done Club

I’m habitually “unkept” and I tend to avoid starting and (even moreso) finishing domestic projects.  Being single, I get kind of bored and lonely doing those projects on my own.  I not only need the accountability but I also need the company!  Plus, I never seem to make ample time to spend with friends–especially my sisters in christ . . .
So one night when I was out shopping with my friend Amy who’s also a single mom of teenage boys)–we conceived of a fantastic idea. We invited our friend, Tami (soon to be NOT single :), and we were good to go . . . Get ‘R Done Club was Born!

Concept–each month, we rotate to one of our homes. That person is the “host” and gets to choose a project for us all to work on at their home for 3-4 hours. (Host cooks or provides snacks). We’ve since added one more woman to the mix, but I think 3-4 people is perfect for this concept. We’ve talked using our time to volunteer for a cause of the hosts choice instead. No restrictions on the type of project we’ll be doing. The host informs us ahead of time so we can dress appropriately.

January was our inaugural Get ‘R Done Club gathering! And I got to be the first host! I was originally thinking we’d paint my bathroom–because I have new bathroom decor I’m waiting to put up. However, my bedroom has been an absolute disaster for a LONG time.  After a half hearted attempt to redecorate 2 years ago followed by boxes from my home office needing a “temporary” home . . . lets just say my bedroom had seen better days.  The walls were still half painted and splotchy, file boxes owned over half the room, dust bunnies the size of full grown rabbits had taken up residence between boxes and I lived like a refugee in my own home. AND I don’t have a headboard. I’ve always wanted a headboard. I think a headboard says “I am an established adult. I have a job. I take care of myself. I respect myself. I sleep with confidence that my bed will NOT roll away from the wall during the night. I have dignity as a Christian woman.” Yeah (ahem), there’s alot riding on that one piece of bedroom furniture.

So the night before GRDC I’m vascilating between bathroom colors–and I stop and pray–and I decide instead that I should use my ‘Get R Done” time to get my Bedroom DONE! But I wake up the next morning in a cold sweat–these women are good friends but do they really want to see the reality of how their friend lives like a refugee?? And do i have to do “precleaning” before they get here? and I don’t even know where to start!? and I should just cancel . . .I mean really this is a ridiculous idea Lord! . . . yeah I’ll cancel and not have to ever deal with my room. Being a refugee isn’t so bad.

I manage NOT to cancel and my Godly friend arrived at 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon and by 4:30:

  • We prayed over my room and the house and gave the space to God
  • The boxes were moved to the basement
  • The dustbunnies were evicted from my bedroom
  • Summer clothes and clothing that WILL FIT again soon went to the basement
  • 3 bags of clothes, shoes and books were packed in the back of my vehicle to be taken to Good Will
  • The bed was moved and many sock-mates were found
  • The walls and trim were touched up and a second coat applied
  • At least 2 additional opportunities arose for us to stop what we were doing and pray aloud for each other!

I’m excited to see what the year will bring for us as we meet monthly in fellowship to serve each o ther.

    Get ‘R Done has been such an awesome thing on so many levels for each of us involved. I’m thankful Tara began the Club. What an incredible thing to have so many needs met (a project that needs helping hands, time together to serve, be served, laugh, cry, pray).
    I’m so proud of her follow-through and not bailing at the thought of being so transparent and vulnerable to her friends (I know she wanted to almost more than she wanted the help).
    We did cleaning for month #2 also.
    I will appreciate the return of those investments in due season! As for me, since I’m in wedding planning mode, instead of clean-up I enlisted the help to address invitations. I think the funniest part of the event was when I told them they could address their own invites…the looks on their horrified faces was PRICELESS!
    Thanks God for friends willing to do what others will not!
