If you aren’t one of the lucky ones who get to escape Minnesota’s long winter over spring break to visit someplace exotic, there are still many great opportunities to spend time with your family and create lasting memories.
Skip jet-lag and foreign-food tummy troubles with these local attractions and ideas to keep the family busy when the kids are off from school:
- Visit an indoor playground. Let the kids burn off some energy
at a local indoor playground. You can find many options at malls for free, or head to a larger facility dedicated to indoor fun! I recommend checking out Edinborough Park, a 70-degree
one-acre park featuring one of the largest indoor play structures
in the country, a junior-Olympic size swimming pool, running track and fitness area, and a multi-purpose play area. A
complete list of local indoor activity locations can be found on
the Twin Cities Moms Blog. - Take your family to the movies. Can’t spend a fortune on tickets and treats? Now through March 22, 2015, Marcus
Theaters is offering $2 admission for select 10:00 a.m. shows
on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Popcorn and fountain
drinks are also available for $2.75. Be sure to get all the details
and find the location closest to you here. - Check out Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America.
Thrill your family and test your own spirit of adventure with a
day of rides, adventure courses, scavenger hunts, and arcade games at Nickelodeon Universe. Save up to $12 when you visit both Nickelodeon Universe and SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium, also at the MOA. - See the wildlife at the Minnesota Zoo. Even if you can’t head to Mexico, you can still get a taste of the tropics at the Minnesota Zoo! Catch a bird show, shark feeding, or play with the penguins; there are enough indoor exhibits to entertain and educate your family for an entire day.
- Initiate a family fun sleepover. Challenge another family with kids in similar age groups to a night of fun. Fill your family room with sleeping bags, family movies, popcorn, and games. Invent your own homemade obstacle course, have silly string fights, or even hold a talent show. Whatever you decide to include, you’ll create memories that the kids will remember forever. May the best family win!
- Take a winter hike. Put on some boots, pack your camera, and go for a winter hike! Minnesota is blessed with so many wonderful parks and trails. The Lebanon Hills Visitor Center in Dakota County offers trail access, warm fires, as well as cross country ski and snowshoe rentals for your family to enjoy. After your winter excursion, share a hot cocoa and snuggle up with some cozy blankets next to the outdoor fire pit.
