We are that family. We are the ones who love to plan and dream and peruse Pinterest for great crafting ideas, especially ideas for making gifts for family, friends, neighbors, and teachers. Long before Pinterest, I saved pages and pages ripped from magazines and stored them in full folders of crafts and recipes for someday. One of our favorite ideas is homemade bath bomb fizzies, which we make at Valentine’s Day. Winters can be long and a little fun in the kitchen and at bath time goes a long way for moms (and kids) short on daylight and energy in the cold months.

There are all kinds of fancy molds and methods to making these fun bathtime soakers, but in our family, simplicity and ease are something we have always embraced. Only half-jokingly, I often suggest that “add water and stir” is my life’s motto. The only caveat to this fun DIY is to watch out for teachers with great senses of humor.

The recipe below is an inexpensive and fun way to spend an afternoon crafting with your kids but could also be a neat treat to give to your kids for Valentine’s Day.

One idea I have never tried, but have seen recently, is where you place a small bath toy in the middle of the fizzie which is then revealed when placed in the bath water. As much fun as these are to make, they are even more fun to watch fizz and swirl in the bathtub!

Enjoy some family time together and just have fun!

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid, powder (I bought mine from my local pharmacy)
  • 2 tsp. sweet almond oil
  • Essential oil (we really like citrus, lavender, or peppermint oils)
  • Food coloring
  • Optional ingredients: dried flowers, herbs, or small bath toys

Supplies Needed:

  • Large bowl and small bowl
  • Whisk/sifter
  • Spoon
  • Craft molds, muffin tins, ramekins/tiny bowls, or silicone ice cube tray

Steps:

  1. Sift together baking soda and citric acid in large bowl.  Set aside.
  2. In the small bowl, mix together the almond oil, 6-8 drops of essential oil, and 6 drops of food coloring.  You can adjust the amount of scent and coloring to what you like, but be careful because too much coloring can stain the bathtub.
  3. Pour the oil mixture from the smaller bowl into the dry ingredients of the larger bowl and mix QUICKLY before the fizzing goes to completion.
  4. Combine with fingers to evenly distribute the coloring. (Kid-tested – momma-approved step!)
  5. Use a small amount of oil to grease the mold/container of your choice.
  6. Fill mold/container with fizzie mixture and pack firmly.  If using the hidden toy idea, place a third of mixture in the mold, then the toy, and pack as much of the mixture around the toy as possible.  Again, make sure to pack firmly.
  7. Leave the bath bomb fizzies to dry at least 24–36 hours.
  8. When dry, ease out gently and store in an airtight container or plastic baggie.
  9. Place in warm bath to enjoy both the fun fizzie and the giggles of your children!
