What do you do while you are waiting?
In a world of instant gratification, waiting is something that is disappearing from our lives. We don’t have to wait in lines anymore. We can purchase almost everything online, we do our banking from our phones, we can check in early to our airline flights, and even at Disney World there is a FastPass option. We are becoming more and more frustrated when we do have to wait in a line and complain about customer service. Yet there are nearly 100 verses in the Bible about waiting for God, patiently and sometimes in silence. “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him,” Psalm 62:5 (ESV).
Dr. Brian Simmons writes in his commentary on Psalm 25:5, “The Hebrew word most commonly translated as wait (wait on the Lord) is qavah, which also means to tie together by twisting, or entwine, or wrap tightly. This is a beautiful concept of waiting upon God, not as something passive, but entwining our hearts with him and his purposes,” (The Psalms: Poetry on Fire).
“Escort me along the way, take me by the hand and teach me. For you are the God of my increasing salvation; I have wrapped my heart into yours,” Psalm 25:5 (The Passion Translation).
As you are waiting for the answer to a prayer or the fulfillment of a dream, don’t sit back passively. Entwine your heart with God and trust that the journey of waiting is just as important as the destination.
As John Ortberg said, “Waiting is not just something we have to do until we get what we want. Waiting is part of the process of becoming what God wants us to be.”
What is one prayer you are waiting on God to answer?
Are you being impatient or have you entwined your heart with God in this process?
