It has been 11 years since I caught a break from the lawn mowing duties of our 5 acres of lawn we regularly groomed down at our hobby farm in Waseca, MN.  Since we moved up to our “smaller” country plot just south of St. Stephen we have a mere 2 acres to mow and my husband has taken over those duties.  (Not that I haven’t filled in a time or two.)

But this week, Jeff had Doctors orders to take a break from anything potentially jarring, so I climbed back on the lawn mower once again to accomplish the 3 hours of lawn mowing that desperately needed to be done.   Thank goodness we have a rider lawn mower in this heat, but the thought of taking even 3 hours out of the day to circle our lawn wasn’t “firing me up!”

However, once I settled in to the routine, I began to remember the early years of spending about 8 hours a week on the lawn mower on our hobby farm.  The boys were young and it was my “escape” time to dream, create, and pray while I was uninterrupted.  Much was accomplished in the spiritual realm by needing to groom that lawn!

So last week I found myself engaging in my 3 hours with a powerful time of worship and prayer.  I’m sure the country neighbors were a little surprised when I got a little carried away and started singing “Our God is greater, Our God is Stronger, God You are higher than any other!”    But my focus completely changed from this chore that I had to do, to a ministry of prayer that I got to do!!

How about you?  What are the mundane things in your day that you could turn into a refocused prayer or worship time?  Is it your car time or maybe even lunch break?  Maybe it is your lawn mower time or perhaps your daily exercise?

Here are some of the scripture prayers that came to mind for my family:

  • Luke 18:27……. “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God
  • Col 3:23………. “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,…
  • Josh 1:9………… “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • Phil 1:6…………….. “(Be) confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ,…”
  • Rom 8:31……… “If God be for us, who can be against us?

That last scripture took me right to the middle part of Chris Tomlin’s worship song “Our God is Greater.”  The middle of the song has this powerful bridge with motivating drums that says:  And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?  And if our God is for us, then what could stand against?  What could stand against?

So, on my lawnmower right out in front of our pretty traveled county road I am playing the drums on the steering wheel and declaring that song in a not so quiet way!  I’m telling ya it was powerful…and super nerdy.   And I would do it again in a heart beat!  It changed my day.

Don’t let the seemingly mundane things slip by without the opportunity to have God interject a little (or a lot) of His presence in your present.

If you need some inspiration, here is a link to the song I was referring to!
