I work with numerous women and their families on their financial planning goals.  Many come to me with no idea where to start.  So here is the secret to life-long financial planning – Know how much money is coming in and where the money goes.   As long as you don’t have more going out than is coming in, you have a great start on financial planning.  Sounds easy, right?  Well, this can be the hardest part of taking care of your money.  You think you have enough in your checking account to pay the bills, but something unexpected comes up.  Or you put money on a credit card, fully expecting to pay it off next month, and next month there is another need for that money.  Or your spouse spends the money you have designated for a particular expense.

How do you stay conscious of where the money is going, every day, every time you make a purchase?  There’s an App for that!  Mint.com (www.mint.com)  has a great way of pulling all your accounts together on one web site and on your smartphone.  You can see at any time what your balances are and it even categorizes them for you!  Want to know how much you are spending on gas every month?  Mint.com will keep a running total.

There are a number of other software products that help you keep track of your money.  I can recommend a number of them, but this is the easiest I have seen for anyone who is just getting started. Once you know where the money is going, you can make better decisions about how you choose to give, save and spend it.
