One sunny late spring day, I met a dear friend of mine to take a walk around a local lake. We love to walk and pray together when we can. I brought my little dog, Joy, along with me so she could get her exercise. The lake is located in a nice, safe, suburban neighborhood across the street from a local high school.
As we began to walk away from our vehicles, I sensed an inner prompting that I should go back and retrieve my purse out of my car. My friend did the same. It was just a little internal nudge, but I sensed it was the Holy Spirit’s reminder. We retrieved our purses then also prayed for protection for our vehicles and ourselves before we began our walk.
Off we went walking, chatting, and praying together for the next hour. We enjoyed two trips around the lovely path on the lake’s edge. When we returned to the parking lot, we were shocked to find that a vehicle directly next to our two vehicles had a smashed window.Ours, however, had not been touched. We were quite shocked! I used my cell phone to make a report to the local police. As far as I knew, this kind of crime was not the norm in that part of town.
It was then I remembered the prompting I’d received about taking our purses with us before we left on the walk. I also remembered our prayer for protection over our vehicles. We both agreed it was God’s intervention that had protected our cars and us. I had nothing more than a small inner nudge to make me stop and return to my car, but I was glad I had listened.
God’s word in Proverbs 3:5-6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” I believe it was the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit, and God’s angelic protection, that helped us that day as we walked and prayed together. I’m so grateful for praying friends. In light of the surroundings, it really didn’t make sense to return to my car, but I did it based on the small, still voice in my heart. I believe if we “pray about everything,” as we are instructed in Philippians 4:6, we will be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings, and He will more clearly direct us. I am glad my friend and I were walking on His path that day.
